August Mixer Kicks Off
NAWBO-VC Dinner Meetings

"I loved the networking mixer!"
"What a great meeting!"
"I joined the organization after seeing your flyer at the chamber meeting."
"I enjoyed the new venue and the food, too."
These positive comments and more were testimony to the success of NAWBO-VC's first dinner meeting held on August 27th Dinner Meeting at the Palm Garden Hotel.
President Sandy Allan welcomed members, new members, corporate partners and guests to an information-packed and fun-filled networking meeting.  She introduced Union Bank as a new Corporate Partner, the new 2009-10 Board and several new NAWBO-VC programs such as the "Hot Off The Press", which gives members the opportunity to announce any successes they may have enjoyed.  Also, there will be a Member of the Month drawing. Members will put in their business cards at the beginning of each meeting. One will be drawn and that member will be given a chance to advertise their business with an article on the website.
President Allan also reminded members of various seminars including a "Benefits of Minority Certification" Workshop hosted by Amgen, Corporate Partner. Wendy Matheu from Amgen answered questions regarding the Workshop.
President Allan then introduced a Speaker Application that is now available to members and a Standing Reservation form.
Neil Palache, Membership Director introduced new members and they spoke about their businesses.  They are: Steve Borowski of OneCoach of Ventura; Desta Denzel of Paychex, Inc; Danya Smith, State Farm Insurance/Dennis Predmore Agency.
Elaine Hollifield, Programs Director, introduced the networking game "Getting to Know You". It was a huge success as members and nonmembers interviewed each other and presented each other to the group. In the favorite food category, pizza and sushi won hands down.  There were plenty of business cards being exchanged, too.
Elaine also reminded the group of the upcoming September and October meetings.  On September 24th, Starr Hall, publicist, author and social media strategist will present "Learn How to Social Network for Powerful Publicity and Higher Profits".
On October 22nd, Ursula Mentjes, Inspirational Speaker, Author and Sales Coach, will inform with " Master the Principles of Selling with Intention and Double or Triple Your Sales This Year."
"These two programs promise to be educational as well as entertaining. I encourage both members and nonmembers to attend," said Elaine.

Member of the Month

If you have been associated with NAWBO VC for long then you know Jerri Hemsworth.  What a member to showcase!

Since opening their doors in 1996, NewmanGrace has taken a "no B.S. approach" to marketing. Old school marketing and advertising wastes time, wastes money, and wastes opportunities. They take a different approach.  And, they have helped many NAWBO VC members with their marketing / advertising needs.  NewmanGrace is about relationships. Working closely with clients. Understanding your wants and needs. Creating actionable strategies that get you results.

Jerri is all about helping other women in their growth and education, not only in business, but in taking advantage of the opportunities afforded by your NAWBO membership.  Jerri is Past President of NAWBO VC and Past President of NAWBO California.  Jerri has stepped into every role on the Board of directors, but hadn't yet been Treasurer.  This year she is our Treasurer.

Get to know Jerri.  She can provide good advise and she is a true friend.  Her skills and knowledge are valuable.

Congratulations Jerri!

Amgen Hosts ISO Certification Workshop Focusing on Supplier Development.
Representatives from small and diverse businesses were represented at the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9001:2008 Certification Workshop on July 8 at Amgen's headquarters in Thousand Oaks, CA. The event, hosted by Amgen's supplier diversity liaison officer Wendy Matheu, is one of many workshops in a series offered by Amgen designed to share information with small and diverse businesses.
Amgen hosted the workshop as part of the company's commitment to supplier diversity. An element of Amgen's supplier diversity program is to provide practical opportunity to small and diverse businesses. An additional element of the program is to inform, motivate and provide information in the areas of leadership skills and small business certification to business owners. Local business development organizations attended, including the National Association of Women Business Owners Ventura County, NAWBO VC), as well as supplier diversity professionals from the pharmaceutical industry. Farryn Melton, Amgen's Vice President of Global Strategic Sourcing supported the event.
