The Mission of NAWBO Ventura County is to provide education and encouragement for the growth of women business owners and creating an awareness of our presence through a single voice in our community.

Our goals for the 2009 - 2010 session are to provide many opportunities to help you be successful.

Our upcoming dinner meeting on Thursday, January 28, 2010 is an example of the goals we set for this year and of our commitment to you as NAWBO members.  This is not a dinner that you will want to miss.  Please see below for the details.

Susan Stone 

Many of you know Susan, but you can learn a little more about her.  Those of you who don't know Susan.....Get to know her.  You will be pleased that you did!


Susan Stone grew up in the San Fernando Valley and graduated from Taft High School in Woodland Hills.  She has lived in Agoura Hills for 27 years.

After her first year of Spanish in Jr. High, Susan was invited to spend the summer with a family in Puebla, Mexico.  The experience changed her life forever.  Susan is now fluent in Spanish, French, Portuguese and English and continues to study other languages.  She has lived in Mexico, Spain, France and Brazil and her travels include Angola, The Republic of Georgia, Israel Taiwan and China.  She raised her son David Adler bilingually in Spanish. 

Susan graduated from Pomona College in Claremont, earned 3 life teaching credentials from UCLA and CSUN and was a teacher and Bilingual/ESL administrator within the Los Angeles Unified School District.  Disenchanted with the school system Susan returned to UCLA to study marketing, advertising and public relations and completed their program for a Professional Designation in Marketing and Merchandising.  When GTE hired her as an independent contractor, she formed her own marketing and public relations firm and worked for a myriad of companies including IBM, Adray's, Brookside Savings & Loan and the Salick Cancer Center.  In 1987, one of her clients recruited her to Commercial Real Estate.  Susan worked for Beitler and Daum Commercial, and served on an Advisory Committee for the Daily News.  When the commercial market soured in the early 1990s, Susan changed to residential real estate with the Jon Douglas Company.  She has been with White House Properties since 1995 where she has been in the top 5% in production company- wide.  She has her broker's license, a GRI and SRES®, has taught first-time homebuyer's classes for Bank of America and has written articles for both The Daily News and The Acorn.

Let's get to know Danya Smith better!  Danya joined NAWBO VC three months ago and she's a great addition to the organization.  

We're honored to have you as a member, Danya!

My name is Danya Smith and I am a mom to 4 kids. Adam is 20, Justin is 20, Corey is 18, and April is 17. My wonderful husband Steve and I moved to the Conejo Valley area just over 2 years ago. We moved from Santa Clarita which was our home town for about 20 years. Adam and Justin have moved and both doing well in their endeavors. Corey is currently attending Moorpark College and April is a Junior at Westlake High School.
I began my career with State Farm just over six years ago. I currently work for Dennis Predmore's agency and have been with his office for over 3 years. I am fully licensed in auto, home, health, bank and life insurance products.  Also, I carry my Notary Commission. Currently I am taking my fifth course from The American College to obtain my Life Underwriting Council Training Fellowship or LUTCF.

Greetings!
It is often that I reflect on the value of being a member of NAWBO.  And then at our recent monthly board meeting the group had a discussion about the benefits of membership in this professional nationwide organization.  I think we sometimes forget what we can get from our membership if we take advantage of what's available.

I am sure you have all heard of that famous radio station WIIFM (What's in it for me?)  I am now going to ask that you sit back and listen to WIIFM....

The following Mission Statement says it all.  What woman business owner would NOT want this support when running a business?  I sure know I need it!

Mission Statement

The National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) 
propels women entrepreneurs into economic, social and political spheres of power worldwide by strengthening the wealth creating capacity of our members and promoting economic development within the entrepreneurial community,creating innovative and effective change in the business culture and building strategic alliances, coalitions and affiliations, as well as transforming public policy and influencing opinion makers.

Personally, my membership with NAWBO VC has brought me the following benefits, just to name a few...

The value of business education, mentorship, and growth.  At least once each month we have a program that provides informative guidance on how we can be better business owners.  I have received guidance from other NAWBO members that has made me a stronger business owner.  I have grown, both as an individual and as a business owner, because of the benefits of NAWBO.

The opportunity to build new relationships and alliances, gain trust in fellow members, to be referred to new clients by fellow members, to refer business to trusted members, and to gain some really great friendships as a side benefit.

Attendance at the national conferences and visits to Sacramento for Public Policy Days.  If not for NAWBO VC I would not have had these opportunities to meet many other NAWBO members, hear fantastic speakers, attend great work shops, and to actually meet with government officials and to have the opportunity to ask them how they are going to help business owners.

Women are now half of the U.S. workforce, more than half of college enrollment, and the primary earners in more than two-thirds of American families. While we're doing so much to move forward, it's an interesting opportunity to look at where we have been and the impact that women business owners make-and to look ahead and plan our course.

We have enormous opportunities for success.  How better can we take advantage than by being a part of an organization that is solely structured to aid in our successes? I don't know of any other organizations that provide that same Power to Business.  

When you listen to your radio station....WIIFM....what comes to mind when measuring the value of being a NAWBO VC member?  Listen carefully, I think you will be amazed if you are truly taking advantage of what's available.  And, most importantly, get involved!

Nordstrom "Shop 'til You Drop" Breakfast
A good time had by all!

On Wednesday, November 4th,  our group of 17 met for a fantastic breakfast, a "what's in for fall" style show, and we were then let loose in the Nordstrom store to take advantage of the 1/2 Yearly Sale....and what a sale it was.  

I have determined that we can label this day as a day of education.  It was for me.  I learned the new excuses as to why we must buy.  Now, if I can just quote a few so that you will be able to grow with this same knowledge.

"I lost the hanger for this sweater.  Now I must buy it!"

"These jeans do wonders for my figure.  I must by them".  I heard that from three different NAWBO shoppers so it must be true.

"These necklaces are on sale and we heard that we should layer many necklaces at one time so I must buy them"

"Bravo is coming up in May 2010.  This dress matches the theme of the luncheon.  I must buy it!"

And, then there were at least two NAWBO that were so excited, they didn't lock themselves in the dressing room; they locked themselves out of the dressing room.  Not sure you want to learn from this!

Due to the great success of this event, and also due to popular demand, we will be having the same event next year.  If I were you I would plan on attending!  You will be a much better shopping business owner...I know I am!

Greetings! 

The next few months are going to be very busy.  Our commitment to you at the beginning of this year was to provide more education and benefits.  And, that's what we are going to do.

Please see Elaine's aritcle below about some of the events we have planned for the balance of 2009.

Please also plan on attending our Ribbon Cutting for NAWBO VC at the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce on , Thursday, October 15th, beginning at 4:30 PM.  We just joined the Chamber and we want the city of Camarillo to know about us. Come help us tell others about NAWBO VC.

And, we are going to kick off 2010 with a bang!  We are very excited about an all day conference that is currently being planned for Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the Amgen campus.  It's a day packed with great business educational information.  We plan to end the day with a fantastic keynote speaker, followed by a reception whereby all can meet and network with other attendees.  We hope that this is the start of something big in 2010 and beyond!
Our comrades, SCORE, also have many great educational events happening starting in October and NAWBO VC members can take advantage of great workshops at discounted pricing.  Visit their websitefor the dates and times.

Welcome New Members...

My Membership Committee, which includes Anthony Mitchell and Sheryl Tuchman, is very excited about five recent additions to our roles in the last two months. Our two newest members, who were introduced at our last dinner meeting, are Jennifer Gross and Nancy Mayerson. Jennifer is the owner of Databasics in Newbury Park and specializes in database programming. Nancy is the owner of Mayerson Marketing & Public Relations and specializes in, you guessed it, marketing and public relations. They are both on our roster at www.nawbovc.org in addition to being plastered all over the internet so feel free to give them a call and make them feel welcome.

In addition to the many wonderful events that are being planned, we will be having a New Member Breakfast very soon. Please watch for up-coming announcements as to the time, date and place of this event.

CHRISTA NONNEMAKER...
As you will see from Christa's article about being Member of the Month, she forgets to tell about herself.  So, I guess I just have to add a little about Christa.  Christa is such a great person to know.  She always has a smile on her face, she's always willing to help, and she enjoys her family so much.  She is a Past President of NAWBO VC.  And, this year she and Jake have graciously let the Board of Directors use their conference room for our board meetings.  Thank you so much Christa and Jake!

Social Media Expert Impresses Members 

Starr Hall, an accomplished publicist and social media strategist worldwide, wowed everyone at the NAWBO-VC September  dinner meeting held on September 24th, at the Palm Garden Hotel.  

She delivered an informative presentation with an engaging and enthusiastic delivery. Many people went away with new strategies on how to grow their business through social media. Starr is the author of "GET CONNECTED-The Social Networking Toolkit for Business". She has grown her personal business 238% through social networking in the past 8 months alone! Starr also hosts a national on-the-dial radio show- Keeping Company, and she is a regular columnist for Entrepreneur Magazine dot com and Central Coast Magazine.
